PRIMARY SCHOOL

Primary School / Cambridge Curriculum

AIS, a private school located in Lisbon, offers a primary school curriculum for children between 6 and 12 years old, from the 1st to the 6th grade.

The AIS bilingual educational project is based on a multidisciplinary approach that aims at the development of oral language, the progression of reading and writing, the development of the essential concepts of arithmetic and calculus, of the physical and social environment, and of the artistic, dramatic, musical, and motor expressions.

It is at this stage that the systems of comprehension, exploration, critical approach, theoretical retention, presentation of points of view, systems for solving questions/problems – in a perspective of acquisition and consolidation of themes – are launched.

It is in the 3rd grade that a third language – German – is introduced to broaden the linguistic and cultural knowledge of AIS students.

From 5th grade on a new language – French – is introduced. This training continues to be complemented by certification of the corresponding language skills.

ASTORIA TEAM

The AIS multidisciplinary team is made up of the class teachers, specific curriculum teachers, study support teachers and educational assistant technicians. The AIS team is guided by a pedagogical direction that manages each teaching year.

The teaching of AIS, in Primary School, is interdisciplinary in order to ensure that the pedagogical components contribute to the academic, personal and social development of students, with objectives such as: the stimulation of creativity; the acquisition of new skills; mental plasticity; critical thinking and civic values.

AIS is a member of ECIS, the Educational Collaborative for International Schools, a non-profit organisation that aims to support international schools that want to offer excellent teaching, with current practices, thus supporting the development and training of their professionals.

CAMBRIDGE PRIMARY SCHOOL

AIS, as an International School, has several partners in the English Language area, offering all Astoria students – from 5 years old on – the possibility to take a language certification from Trinity College London, the GESE exam (Graded Examination in Spoken English).

This certification begins in Grade 1 and ends in Grade 9, allowing us to monitor and evaluate the academic progress of all of our students.

AIS is part of the Cambridge Assessment International Education network of schools, and a Cambridge International School, which through its curriculum prepares students for academic and professional life.

Furthermore, AIS is certified by Cambridge English Qualifications as an official examination center, which enables our students to take the language certifications, starting at the age of 7 and concluding at the 15. Students can take the Starters, Movers, Flyers, PET, KET and First exams.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES

Outside of school hours, AIS has a library, study and support rooms, and extracurricular activities, in addition to leisure and outdoor playground areas.

PSYCHO-PEDAGOGICAL SUPPORT
